This is a place for pros only, or maybe anyone who is happy to take on a break that comes in right beside some big, solid rocks. It’s kind of an eerie place, very secluded, but can catch some decent waves when everywhere else on the coast is just a bit choppy.
The beach is private but the ocean isn’t, so hit the water as soon as you get down here. The whole area is surrounded by cliffs and feels a little bit enclosed, but the beach and the shore seems to catch the sun all day and is a relaxing place to be.
This is a point break, only to the right, and starts working at about 1.5m before building to a maximum of about 2m or so. You need to be on it at low tide as the tide starts to rise, with the wind coming from the south, southeast or east and the swell coming from the north, northwest or west. The waves have a bit more power than you’d usually expect, but are otherwise fairly ordinary. Length is about average too, with it typically being between 100 and 150m.
You don’t get any facilities here at all. Park at Tawharanui and it’s then about a half hour down to the beach with your board.
The break is pretty close to the rocks so you’ll need to take care with that. There are also strong currents here and plenty of sharks around, though they shouldn’t bother anybody who is taking basic precautions.
